Grapefruit varieties are classified according to the white, red or pink colour of their pulp, the colour of the red or pink varieties being determined by the presence of lycopene pigment. The grapefruit has increased in popularity in many countries over the last two decades. Its juice has a very distinctive taste, being less acidic but more bitter than orange juice.
Grapefruit trees flower during the spring and produce mature fruit during the autumn and winter months, depending on the variety. Grapefruit are at their best to eat from October to March.
